Theatre offers a unique way of studying relationships, humanity, history and the peripheries of imagination. The artist is in the world in a visceral way, asked to find ways to communicate to a group of strangers something s/he feels is worth considering. As I attempt to further understand how my own habitual patterns create an imprint on the world, I thought it would be worthwhile to gather a group of young artists together to discover new ways to pass on storytelling to the next generation. Using Steven Dietz’s magical and heartwarming play, Still Life with Iris, as a template, this project aims:
To create a space where collaboration between all members of the design, performance and production teams can regularly occur
To foster an awareness of the effects artistic design and implementation have on the environment
To develop artistic choices that are sustainable/regenerative/green
To create a learning environment where studying artists can envision the theatre of tomorrow
To expand the artist’s mind towards a more global reach
To explore how theatre can encourage dialogue and action in a community
To encourage the artist to define how s/he will contribute to her/his field and the industry
To assess current practices in the Department of Theatre and Dance, and discover ways in which we might be more efficient, create less waste, and integrate earth-friendly choices when possible
